Terracotta Tile Thickness – 1cm vs 2cm

We’re often asked whether to choose 1cm or 2cm thickness, and the right option usually depends on the type of project and the floor build-up available.

The 1cm thickness is mainly selected where overall floor height needs to be kept to a minimum. In renovation projects, period properties, basements or rooms with lower ceilings, every millimetre matters. Once adhesive is added (typically around 8–12mm), a 2cm tile increases the finished floor level more than some projects allow. This can affect door clearances, thresholds and existing skirting levels. In these situations, the 1cm tile provides the same natural terracotta look and handmade character while reducing the total build-up.

When installed correctly onto a solid, well-prepared subfloor using a suitable adhesive, both thicknesses perform very well in normal residential settings. The strength comes from the quality of the clay, the firing process and correct installation.

We have supplied over 200 Body Shop showrooms worldwide that have installed the 1cm thickness tiles in their retail spaces. Most of these stores are located inside shopping malls, where the permitted floor build-up is limited and it is often not possible to install a 2cm tile once adhesive is included. In these commercial settings, the 1cm thickness has been specified and installed successfully, demonstrating that when fitted onto a suitable base, it performs reliably even in busy retail environments.

The 2cm thickness is the more traditional option and is generally chosen where there are no height restrictions. It offers a more substantial feel underfoot and is the recommended choice for installations over underfloor heating. The additional mass provides greater stability and thermal performance, which is why we do not recommend 1cm tiles for use over underfloor heating systems.

Visually, there is no difference between the two options. The colour variation, surface texture and handmade character remain exactly the same — the difference is purely in the depth of the tile.
