How to Lay a Herringbone Pattern with Saint Martin Pale Terracotta Parquet Tiles | Baked Earth

Creating a herringbone floor using Saint Martin Pale Terracotta Parquet Tiles by Baked Earth is straightforward and creates a timeless, high-end finish perfect for kitchens, hallways and open-plan spaces.

Step 1 – Prepare the Subfloor

Ensure the floor is level, clean and fully dry. Suitable for concrete or screed. If using underfloor heating, make sure it has been commissioned and switched off before installation.

Step 2 – Mark the Centre Line

Measure the room and mark a straight centre line using chalk. Dry-lay a small section first to check alignment and spacing.

Step 3 – Create the First “V”

Lay one tile, then place the next at a 90° angle to form the first V shape. Continue the zig-zag pattern along the centre line. Use 5mm to 7mm spacers grout joints. Use a grout gun to go between the tiles and wipe of any excess grout while the grout it wet.

Step 4 – Build the Pattern

Work outwards row by row, checking alignment regularly. Blend tiles from multiple boxes to achieve a natural, balanced colour variation.

Step 5 – Cut the Edges

Trim perimeter tiles with a wet tile cutter for a clean border and symmetrical finish.

Step 6 – Adhesive, Grout & Seal

Use a flexible adhesive suitable for natural terracotta. Allow to cure before grouting.

For unsealed terracotta tiles:

• Apply one coat of sealer before grouting

• Apply two further coats after installation once dry

Avoid foot traffic for 24 hours after laying and allow full curing after final sealing.

A herringbone layout with Baked Earth Saint Martin Pale Terracotta Parquet Tiles adds depth, movement and classic elegance to any interior while showcasing the natural beauty of handmade clay.
