Unlike porcelain or ceramic tiles, genuine terracotta is naturally porous and absorbent, so correct preparation, adhesive selection and installation techniques are particularly important.

When correctly installed, terracotta provides a strong, long-lasting and beautiful natural floor. However, problems such as tiles becoming loose or lifting after installation can occur if the correct installation procedures have not been followed.

Why Can Terracotta Tiles Become Loose After Installation?

If a terracotta tile becomes loose or lifts from the floor after installation, it is important to establish where the bond has failed.

There are several possible causes, including:

• Dust or loose clay remaining on the back of the tile
• Insufficient adhesive coverage
• Incorrect adhesive selection
• Adhesive being allowed to skin over before the tile is positioned
• Incorrect preparation of the substrate
• Excessive movement within the substrate
• Moisture-related problems
• Incorrect installation over underfloor heating
• Failure to follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions and curing times

Always Remove Dust Before Installation

Terracotta is made from natural clay. During manufacturing, handling, cutting and transportation, a small amount of clay dust or loose material may be present on the underside of the tile.

Before installation, every tile should be checked and the underside thoroughly cleaned so that it is free from dust, loose clay and other contaminants.

Adhesive should never be applied directly onto a dusty or contaminated surface, as this may reduce the strength of the bond.

Achieving the Correct Adhesive Coverage

Good adhesive contact between the substrate and the back of the terracotta tile is essential.

The installer should ensure that adequate adhesive coverage is achieved and that there are no significant voids underneath the tile.

For larger-format or uneven handmade tiles, the installer may need to apply adhesive to both the prepared substrate and the back of the tile, where appropriate, to achieve suitable coverage.

Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Use a Suitable Tile Adhesive

The adhesive must be suitable for:

• The tile size and thickness

Underfloor Heating

Terracotta can be suitable for use with underfloor heating when the complete installation system has been correctly designed and installed.

The heating system should not be used to accelerate the drying of freshly installed tiles, adhesive or grout.

The adhesive and grout must be allowed to cure fully before the underfloor heating is gradually commissioned in accordance with the heating and adhesive manufacturers’ instructions.

Rapid temperature changes should be avoided.

Check the Installation as Work Progresses

We recommend that installers periodically lift a freshly positioned tile during installation to check the transfer and coverage of adhesive onto the back of the tile.
